Adair publisher Sidey, 82, dies

By JACQUELINE LEE • REGISTER STAFF WRITER • January 18, 2008

The longtime editor and publisher of the Adair County Free Press died Thursday of kidney failure. Edwin Sidey was 82.

For 55 years, Sidey was publisher and editor of the paper, where he wrote a weekly column, "Thoughts at Random," and editorials about community issues. The newspaper has been in Sidey's family for four generations.

"He always had an old manual typewriter," said Denna Mitchell, 42, circulation manager for the Free Press. "We always tried to convert him, but to this day, it's sitting in his office and a piece of paper is in it like he's ready to type again."

Sidey was a World War II veteran and an alumnus of Iowa State University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in journalism. He returned to his native Greenfield when his father needed help with the Free Press.

"He was very happy to come home," said Ed's wife, Linda Sidey, 59. "He loved the area and he loved the people and he was a community leader."

Even with health problems in recent years, Sidey maintained his work at the paper and never failed to have a cup of coffee - and the necessary Tums tablet - at Bon's Bakehouse every Thursday, Linda Sidey said.

In his free time, Ed Sidey made model airplanes and was a member of the yacht club.

His wife said he was close to his brother, Hugh, a Time magazine correspondent who wrote about U.S. politics for nearly a half-century. Hugh Sidey died in November 2005 at age 78.

Ed Sidey is survived by his wife and two sons, Kenneth and David, from a previous marriage. Linda Sidey is the current editor and publisher of the Free Press.

Dunedin advocate Sidey dies, aged 99

Dunedin advocate Sidey dies, aged 99

One of Otago's great advocates, former Dunedin mayor and founder of Wickliffe Press, Thomas Kay Stuart Sidey, has died in Wanaka, aged 99.

Mr Sidey died at his home on Sunday after a brief illness, but he had remained active until the past few weeks. He sold his open red BMW coupe earlier this year for another car because he thought it looked too old, his daughter Joy Leslie said.

He was the son of Sir Thomas Kay Sidey, a former parliamentarian who was responsible for the introduction of daylight saving in New Zealand, putting forward the first bill in 1909. Known originally as Sidey Time, it was adopted in 1927.

Mr Sidey, known as Stuart, had a law doctorate and served in the 2nd division's signals unit during World War 2 in the Middle East and Italy, returning as a major.

He was a keen photographer and during his war service he used his movie camera, saying recently that he "dragged that thing all around the war."

The army gave him back his footage and just over a year ago his filming of General Freyberg drinking with the troops, and the bombing of Monte Cassino screened at a Wanaka cinema.

He worked as a barrister and solicitor and bought a factory in 1948 to set up Wickliffe Press, known nationally for its expertise in supplying business forms.

Mr Sidey was elected to Dunedin City Council in 1947 and served for three years, returning again three years later for 12 years, including six as mayor.

He was defeated as mayor in 1965, but returned to the council three years later and served as deputy mayor.

Another former mayor Richard Walls said while Mr Sidey seemed a shy man, he had strong beliefs and expressed himself well.

" He had a lot more vision than people gave him credit for. He kept looking at the future through a much younger person's eyes," Mr Walls told NZPA.

"He didn't like a fuss. but he could be quite a determined person. He was certainly one of our great visionaries and was tremendously loyal to Otago.

"Mrs Leslie said her father, a previous chancellor of Otago University, enjoyed skiing into his 90s and was a keen walker and traveller.

"He was a quiet man, not outgoing, but very astute and he was a great advocate for Dunedin."

Mr Sidey was made a Companion of St Michael and St George (CMG) in 1968 for his services to Dunedin and education.

He was pre-deceased by his wife Beryl and is survived by son, prominent obstetrician and gynaecologist Tom, and daughter Joy and their families.

From Plymouth to Sydney
1852

The Wilson Kennedy arrived from Plymouth to Sydney in 1852, with 481 immigrants. My ancestor Maria Burdett was on board, one of the many single women who were being assisted to reach Australia by the government of the time. I have a copy of one page of the original immigration list, which provides more detail than the passenger list does, so for about 20 names you will note more detail than most. All the passengers are listed below. If you require more details on specific passengers, email the NSW Archives - this data is from microfilm reels 2136 & 2463. Alex Rogers

John Francis Sidey

Jim & Karen Arnel - August 28, 1999. My great grandparents lived in the Fall River area from 1886 until they died. I'm trying to find obituaries (and any other information) for both: John Francis Sidey, died July 13, 1919, buried in Evergreen Cemetery; and Gertrude Lillian Bacon Sidey, died in Wichita, KS July 7, 1938 - buried in Evergreen Cemetery. I do have quite a lot of information for the Sidey Book written by B. J. Thompson, but would like to have copies of the obituaries. If anyone can help, I'd appreciate it. mkarnel@email.msn.com

corstorphine house

A Short History

In 1843 the four sons of the Scottish Sidey family left London to seek their
futures in the America, Canada and New Zealand. John Sidey was attracted to
the New Edinburgh settlement in Otago, New Zealand, by the ready
availability of land. The new town was called Dunedin, the Gaelic form of
Edinburgh. When John Sidey arrived on board the Blundell in 1848, he
immediately saw that the rapidly-developing town was short of essential
supplies and food. Sidey therefore established a general store on the corner
of Princes and High Streets, stocked with goods and supplies from England.
By 1855, Sidey purchased a 2,000 acre estate located on steep, hilly land on
the southern outskirts of the town and named it ‘Corstorphine’ after a
prominent landmark in his native Edinburgh. Eight years later, Sidey
commenced construction of Corstorphine House in plain but elegant Roman
High Renaissance style typical of the neo-classical architecture in Great Britain
at the time. The house soon became the scene for many grand social
occasions, such as the first champion ploughing match in October 1864,
regular meetings of the Otago Hunt Club and Sidey’s annual champagne
birthday dinner. The original house in ‘Palladian Style’ was later added to with
other styles like art nouveau and the house underwent many refurbishments,
most notably in 1910 when the current Main Dining, Music and Gold rooms
were added.
John Sidey gradually sold or leased much of the Corstorphine Estate,
involving himself instead in public affairs and international travel. In 1915, while
planning his next world trip, he died at the age of 92. One of the new owners,
Sir Thomas Sidey also enjoyed a long and distinguished career of public
service as a Member of Parliament. Amongst Sir Thomas’ achievements, were
the establishment of the Dental School in Dunedin, and the introduction of
daylight saving (or ‘Sidey Time’) in 1927.
The Presbyterian Church of New Zealand purchased the home in 1957.
However, the Sidey connection with Corstorphine House was renewed in royal
style in February 1963, when the son of Sir Thomas Sidey as Mayor of Dunedin
welcomed Queen Elizabeth II. For this occasion, the Sidey dining table was
relocated from Corstorphine to the Grand Hotel (on the site of John Sidey’s
original shop) to accommodate the fourteen settings at an intimate royal
dinner.
The house, conservatory, stables, gazebo and gateway, now registered with
the New Zealand Historic Places Trust, together with 12 hectares of land, were
purchased by Irina and Nico Francken in March 1998, since when they have
lovingly restored and adapted this historic Dunedin home as a private hotel
and fine dining restaurant.

Sidey-LaRose House - 47 Maple Avenue

Sidey-LaRose House - 47 Maple Avenue Welland ON

This two-storey dwelling greatly resembles the neighboring house at 53 Maple Avenue (see No. 11) in both shape and style. Both have Italianate elements such as the semi-circular and elliptically-arched windows and decorative frieze seen here. Built by brickmaker Thaddeus Hooker, it was sold to J.J. Sidey in 1874.

Deseronto Food Market

I know these people are related.

Deseronto Food Market, nestled on the Mohawk Bay at the mouth of the Napanee River in the 170 year old community of Deseronto, Ontario Canada, is one of the oldest stores in Ontario. It was once an IGA, before that a Red & White and in the late 1880's, a grocery and mercantile business.

30 years ago it was purchased by the Sidey family and is still owned and operated by husband and wife team Robert and Shauna Sidey, brother Peter Sidey and mother Jean Sidey.

The Deseronto Food Market is a store that believes in community involvement and support. Delivery, special orders, even a hug: are all just part of everyday life at the store.

History of Hamlets in Hamilton Township

History of Hamlets in Hamilton Township

By Former Reeve Charlotte Clay-Ireland

Settlement of the township began in the late 1700’s and on February 14, 1791, the township was officially named after Henry Hamilton, Lieutenant Governor of Quebec. “By land and water we flourish” is an expression of the Township’s history and ongoing character, as well as its motto.

The township has a rural charm and consists of six hamlets – Baltimore, Bewdley, Camborne, Cold Springs, Gore’s Landing and Harwood. Lake Ontario and the Town of Cobourg bound it on the north by the famous Rice Lake and to the south.

The township is surrounded with very interesting historical attractions. For example, there is the Joseph Scriven Monument which recognizes Joseph Scriven who wrote the hymn, “What a Friend We have in Jesus”; Mount Ararat, the highest point of the Rice Lake plains and home in 1849 to early Canadian writer Catharine Parr Traill; the Cobourg-Peterborough Railroad Causeway that once crossed Rice Lake where partially submerged remains are still visible; Ball’s Mill which lets the visitor step back into time to 1842 when the unique structure began as a carding mill and saw mill.

A visit to Hamilton Township offers an incredible diversity of attractions for visitors with Rice Lake being the main attraction appealing to fishermen, nature lovers, water sports enthusiasts, and the many people who simply wish to get away, get some fresh air, sunshine and relax.

Bewdley, located at the northwestern part of the township is an ancient village, using North American dating. It was originally the site of a native settlement, and was thought to be a stopping place of the Mound Builders when they travelled to Ohio via the Ganaraska trail, a portage from Rice Lake to Port Hope.

The first land grant was issued in 1794 to Nellie Grant, the daughter of Alexander Grant, a prominent colonial administrator. The 200-acre grant included most of what is now Bewdley.

Bewdley was first named Black’s Landing after the first tavern on the site. William Black had an inn license in 1831. It was also the location of one of the first Rice Lake sawmills. In the mid-1900’s, it became Mill Point Lodge. Today, it is the site of Mill Point apartments.

In 1833, William Bancks named the village Bewdley. Bancks named the area for his ancestral home Bewdley, Worcestershire, England when he attempted to found an ill-fated gentlemen’s colony and sawmill at Cold Creek.

Bewdley is noted for its memorial to Joseph Scriven, who preached on village streets in the 1860’s.

Today, Bewdley caters to the many tourists and fishermen who come to Rice Lake to enjoy the lake’s fishing and vacation activities.

As you travel east on County Road 9, north of the junction with County Roads 18 and 9, the next point of interest is the historic village of Gore’s Landing nestled around a bay on the south shore of Rice Lake. The area was first called Saxe Town, Sidey’s Tavern, and Claverton. The present village was named after its founder, Thomas Sinclair Gore, a civil engineer from Ireland, who built a plank road from Cobourg to his property on Rice Lake during the 1840’s.

The village has been home to many famous people over the years – Archibald Lampman Jr., one of Canada’s noted poets and world-renowned painter of Canadian historical scenes, J. D. Kelly.

For over a hundred years, Gore’s Landing was an important canoe and boat-building centre. One of the builders, Daniel Herald, is thought to have built one of the first board canoes in the Kawartha region. His canoe known, as ‘Herald’s Patent Cedar Canoe’ was a double cedar canoe, planked inside and outside. In the late 1800’s, this canoe won many medals for Herald at international exhibitions.

Today, Gore’s Landing is a port-of-call with its picturesque gazebo and dock for boaters as they travel Rice Lake and the Trent-Severn Waterway. While in Gore’s Landing, you will enjoy a splendid view of the western end of Rice Lake.

As you continue east on County Road 18, you will wind your way to the hamlet of Harwood, named for a Montreal merchant, Robert Unwin Harwood. The area was first called Sully, by Cobourg entrepreneur and owner of the steamboat Pemedash, James Grey Bethune, to honour his illustrious ancestor, Maximilien de Bethune, Du de Sully.

The first few settlers in the 1820’s were mainly innkeepers and ferry operators. As early as 1827, a ferry reservation near Sully was petitioned for and, in 1833 established a service. In the 1860’s, it was a humming town, with two great sawmills turning out 50,000,000 board feet per year.

At the turn of the century, with the increase in dairy farming in the region, Stanley Southworth founded a creamery at Harwood. After passing through several hands, the business became one of the first co-operative businesses in the area called the ‘Farmer’s Co-operative Creamery Company’. Until the autumn of 1978, when it ceased production, it was a model butter factory, using cooling water from five springs, which maintained a constant natural temperature of 45 degrees, winter and summer. Today, to the north of the original creamery building, which has been demolished, is the Harwood Fish Culture Station. The site consists of 350 acres of land on the north and south sides of County Road 18. The site was chosen for its close proximity to stocking sites; large volume of high quality, spring-fed water of fairly constant temperature, ideal for cold water fish culture and suitable topography to design a gravity-flow station, not requiring pumps, or generators to distribute water. The $5.6 million Harwood Fish Culture station, completed in the fall of 1986 stocks lake trout and brown trout yearlings.

Today, in Harwood, only a few signs are visible of a once bustling industry but you can still see evidence of the Cobourg-Peterborough Railroad causeway that once crossed Rice Lake, carrying settlers’ effects into the hinterland and produce to Cobourg. The last train crossed the causeway in 1860. Some partially submerged remains of the old causeway from Harwood to Tic Island can still be seen. South of the village on County Road 15 is a historical plaque marking the burial place of German workers who died of cholera in 1854, during the construction of the railroad.

Today, Harwood is a quiet village of summer fishing and vacation resorts with the surrounding Northumberland hills providing views over the lake.

Retracing your steps back to County Road 18, head south towards Plainville. The next hamlet of note is Cold Springs, described in 1832 by Catharine Parr Traill. She wrote: “About halfway between Cobourg and the Rice Lake, there is a pretty valley between two steep hills. Here there is a good deal of cleared land and a tavern: the place is called the ‘Cold Springs’. Who knows but some century of two hence, this spot may become a fashionable place of resort to drink the waters. A Canadian Bath or Cheltenham may spring up where now nature revels in her wilderness of forest trees.”

To date, there is no spa or resort in the hamlet; however, the McIntosh General Store, operated by descendants of the founders of the area, is worth a visit. It offers an excellent photo opportunity for old country store buffs. The former Township of Hamilton Municipal office is located here.

Continuing south, the hamlet of Camborne lies ahead. Framed by eternal hills and snuggled down in its broad dale, Camborne was originally settled by people from Cornwall, England, hence its name. In 1878, it was a busy, thriving community with blacksmith shop, carriage shop, gristmill, sawmill and wooden pail factory but Camborne lives on as a residential area. As you leave Camborne, south of Majestic Hills Road on the east side of County Road 18 is the newly constructed Hamilton Township Municipal Civic Centre. A beautiful architecturally designed building, it reflects the heritage aspects of the township.

Travelling south on County Road 18 to the Dale Road (or County Road 74) intersection. Go east until you reach County Road 45 where you will arrive at Baltimore which is considered to be the earliest settled village in the township. At various times, the village was called Fisher’s Mill, Valley Mills and McDougall Mill. The Baltimore Creek, running through the village, once supported flourmills, sawmills, carding and woolen mills and a tannery.

According to the township Local Architectural Conservation Advisory Committee, the name Baltimore was probably given by the first settler, John McCarty. McCarty was a prominent Methodist, recorded in the area as early as 1805. It is thought he named the area for his family’s ancestral home in Baltimore, County Cork, Ireland.

Today, this picturesque valley village is a residential community. It offers the traveller a respite at the Ball’s Mill Conservation Area, located on the Harwood Road on the East Side of the Baltimore Creek. The park, controlled by the Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority, is located on land once part of the Ball’s Mill complex. Ball’s Mill is an outstanding landmark once vital to the area’s economy. The building has been restored under the “Preserving Ontario’s Architecture” program and has been designated an historic site by the L.A.C.A.C. of the Township and Province of Ontario. Lambert Stevens first built the mill constructed in the classical revival style, as a carding mill in 1842. It became a flourmill under the ownership of William McDougall. It was later operated and enlarged with several additions by three generations of the Ball family. The flours milled here, known as “The Belle of Baltimore” and “Shurflake” were considered to be among Ontario’s finest flours.

Golf

Golf: "The first golf club in Canada was the Montreal Golf Club, founded in Nov 1873 by Scotsman Alexander Dennistoun; he was also the first president and the captain of the club. He was joined in his efforts by John G. and David D. Sidey, Scottish brothers who had immigrated to Canada. The first course for the Montréal club was over property called Fletcher's Field, owned by the city of Montréal. In 1884, Queen Victoria, through the earl of Derby, bestowed upon the club the 'Royal' prefix. The Quebec Golf Club (now Royal Quebec Golf Club) was founded in 1874. Play was over Cove Field between the Citadel and the Plains of Abraham. Canada's third course belonged to the Toronto Golf Club, founded in 1876."
